newbie question

Postby beenjammin » Fri May 22, 2015 9:49 am

Hi Folks, so I'm sure i'm missing something right in front of me, but I just can't find a knot that corresponds to the line i've received. so my level line has already a loop, that's not a slipknot for the lilian end, and on the tippet end is a tiny metal circle. I haven't seen this type of line in any of the knot examples i've found yet, what am I missing?

thanks in advance for the help

Use a girth hitch to attach line to lilian and a clinch not to attach tippet to the tippet ring.

beenjammin, sounds like you have a tapered line and not level as you note.

Level Line normally is just that, level, no taper, no loops tied it it, etc.... With level line you need to tie a stopper knot on one end where the tippet connects to and a slipknot on other where it connects to the lilian.

So sounds like you have a tapered line and yes, girth hitch for line to lilian connection and then whatever your favorite knot is from tippet ring to tippet.

Hope that clarifies as I wanted to make sure you knew you sound like you have a tapered line and not a level line.

TJ, I make my level lines with a loop at one end and a tippet ring at the other. It is easier to use a girth hitch than a slip knot IMOP. Most slip knots will weaken the line after using it. Although it my take years to do this and the fact the tippet is weaker than the level line, there should be no problem using a elip knot.

with the girth hitch, should I tie a stopper knot on the lilian? it seems like it would slide off otherwise

Many on the Tenkara USA rods already come with a simple overhand knot at the end of the lilian, thus if yours does not have one, just add one.

You do not need one. Just run the lilian through the loop twice, then tighten down the girth hitch.
