Grayling in Montana? Anyone knows?

Postby Daniel @ Tenkara USA » Thu Sep 02, 2010 11:21 pm

Landed in Bozeman a couple of hours ago and just checked in my motel room.
I brought a tamo, of course. Now, I just had the thought that there should be some grayling in Yellowstone and I really would love to get a picture of one in my tenkara net.

Does anyone know a place I can find grayling within 3 or 4 hours away from Ennis, MT? Is it still possible to "target" grayling or are they entirely caught by chance these days?

PM me if this consists of some secret water. Thank you!

I just left Bozeman a few hours ago. We fished 5 days... wedind't catch any graling in the area. They stiocked them in the rivers and some lakes we were told, but none around now. I think our guide said they are more to the north or in some of the higher lakes.

We fished with the Fins and Feather guides... I'm sure they would know.

Lots of other fined options around though. LOL
Aloha,

The Montana fish and wildlife sight has a helpful water body search engine with lists of streams and the fish species they contain.

It appears Hyalite Creek and Emerald Lake have grayling and are within 50 miles of Bozeman. There are good maps on the sight, click on interactive maps under the name of the body of water:

I hope it's helpful, and good luck!

Thank you so much! Grayling in sight tomorrow. I'll be heading to Hyalite with Brian, a local who participates on this forum.
I also hope to check out the upper Ruby River on Monday, where there apparently is a higher chance of Grayling.
Grayling on the tenkara net coming soon, fingers crossed.
