Went out yesterday (Jan 1st) since the weather was in the 40s and the weatherfolk say that's the warmest it's going to be around here for some time.

Was fishing my 11' Iwana with a Woolly Bugger and caught my first Tenkara trout of the new year.

Yeah, as you can tell by his coloration and fins, he was a stockie, but I'll take it. Call me an equal-opportunity angler.

A few more of his buddies were landed as well before I packed it in due to increasing cold & darkness.

Nice fish! You were lucky to get out! Rivers here are in flood and the stilwaters are frozen.

Nice! You have my envy. Even the rivers here in Massachusetts are largely frozen over. There's about 14" of snow down, & somehow, trout fishing isn't on my radar!

Nice fish! Glad you were able to get out before it gets too cold.

State fish of PA no less; Nice brookie!

How did you use the wooly bugger with your tenkara rod? Did you just jerk the rod and jig it a bit across the river?

Yes, I was fishing a small pool no more than 25 feet at it's widest. I'd cast the bugger out and bring it back in slowly with some small jerks and twitches swinging the rod sidearm across my body. I had actually tried some dry flies earlier in the outing, but the fish were just not rising that day.
