LINE CONTROL & STORAGE DEVISE

I love my Tenkara experience in general but had an issue with line control when walking along brushy streams with the line coiled in my rod hand. I fixed the problem with a simple devise. No, not the blue commercial spool, which is nice for line storage, but I think takes too long to employ when going from hole to hole on brushy trails.

I made a plastic tab hook on the rod butt out of a cut up plastic lid, with small 90 degree lip angled down, attached easily with the butt screw. I drilled and shaped a small, closed-cell foam block made from beach sandal foam and squeegeed it on the upper part of the rod butt. The small block has a groove on top to wrap the line. I then wrap the leader (rod collapsed or not) around the bottom hook then back up around the top hook and so on until I run out of tippet and secure the fly to the cork or foam devise, with or without some line spiraling. Retracted, it holds all the pieces in and makes a really tidy package for bushwhacking or storage. Extended, it controls the long tippets I normally use and then you just spin the rod in a gentle circular motion and the rest of the leader spirals up on the rod so branches don't catch the leader easily when walking in brush.

This photo below is of my first attempt, before refining the design somewhat.

A very nice idea! Looks very functional but I still like the blue spool from Daniel. I don't find it very hard to employ. I like how it locks the link in place on the handle, but your line holder is the best home made one I've seen so far. Good job. I like how you've made it so you can hold the line so it doesn't get caught up in the brush while walking from spot to spot.

Larry,

It is an honor to have you as part of the forum. I'm a devotee of your "Nymphing Strategies" book (which I have as part of Lefty's Little Library). Please let us know any new strategies that are a part of the Tenkara experience.
