What else can you use your Tenkara fly rod for?

Postby erik.ostrander » Tue Dec 01, 2009 8:49 pm

Over the weekend I had a long drive home from fishing, and to keep myself entertained in the car I began thinking of all the alternate uses for my Tenkara fly rod. Here's what I came up with, what can you come up with?

Blow-dart gun
A little trumpet
Tent/tarp pole
Snorkel

I guess in a pinch you could use it for all that. Must have been a long drive home. ;)

edited to remove a long and tongue-in-cheek commentary about other uses for a crappie pole once someone replaced it with a real tenkara rod.

Just yesterday, I came across another post on another forum by a guy who wants to use a cheap panfish pole as a tenkara rod - and cited a very old post I had made as justification. My post was from before you could buy a real tenkara rod - which of course he neglected to mention. Now that I've fished with Tenkara USA rods, I certainly would not recommend anyone try to use a panfish or crappie pole as a tenkara rod. They're just not the same.

So, to come back to the topic of the thread, other uses for your tenkara rod - none, it's too valuable for fishing with to risk it. Other uses for cheap panfish or crappie poles - anything you want, as long as it's not as a tenkara rod.

The rod case might make a good wiffle bat, little short though.

I think in a pinch, looking for survival food, blowing a dart at an animal may just do it, but how many of us will actually try that? Snorkel, ok. Trumpet, eh... But, tarp support...and a bat! I have to say, please don't.... on a high quality $150 rod it is not to be recommended. I think tree branches will be a better fit for those.

I can see I'll have to update our warranty to exclude the "what else can you use a tenkara rod for" uses.

Nice, creative topic though.

Pretty sure blowguns are illegal in California.

Why would you need a blowgun for survival food anyway, I mean, you'll have all those fish you've caught. Just don't forget to bring the sea salt and sake. If you have to live on survival rations, at least you can do so in style.

If, during a thunderstorm, I climbed the tallest tree and extended my Yamame, do you think I could recharge my cell phone battery?

Maybe use your Tenkara rod for a telescope.

I like this one the best, though all of them are good ones.

maybe we should all go out and fish more; methinks this thread says we (and i count myself in, since I am obviously reading it and replying!) have way too much time on our hands and may just be a little obsessive.
